I was inspired by some swimming self-portraits over at “Use Your Coloured Pencils” and loved the floating hair. My students gave it a go today and made some of the cutest paintings in their journals, as they look forward to summer vacation.
1. I gave students a 2" circle to trace for the head, to give them a head start. Following my directions on the board, they drew outstretched arms, a body, and legs.
2. The drawing was traced with a permanent black marker.
3. Students used crayons to color in the hair, skin and swimsuit. Heavy coloring works best.
4. The drawing was painted over with liquid watercolor paint. A caption was added above, along with a date below.
Thanks to Spencer, grade 3, for letting me share his charming artwork.

hi,
can we use this picture on our website? the website still under construction, but we do swimming classes for the kids.
Thanks
Hi,
I'm OK with you using that image as long as you give a credit somewhere to "Spencer C. at ArtProjectsforKids.org" Thanks. Can you send a link when the site is up as I'd love to share it with Spencer. Thanks!
I have to tell you how much I love your blog. I am a third grade teacher and we don't have any art teachers, nor time set apart to teach art specifically. I don't feel that I'm exactly artistically inclined when it comes to kid art, although I do love art. I have been browsing here and I love that you tell us how to do these things step-by-step. I'm going to do some of these projects with my own children before summer is over and will have the practice of doing them with my 30 students in the fall as I find ways to do art along with our literacy, math, science and social studies. THANK YOU for taking the time to post instructions and examples!!!! I am definitely going to refer your site to other teachers!
