Here’s a breakdown of how to draw a ship with sails. Drawing the sails from the bottom up makes it easier to connect them at the corners to create the windblown look.
1. Draw the hull near the bottom of the paper.
2. Add the three masts as shown.
3. Add the sails to each mast working from the bottom up and from stem to stern so they overlap properly.
4. The mast lines inside the sails are erased.
5. Water, clouds, moon, flags and hull details are added.
6. The drawing is traced with a black marker and then colored in with colored pencils.

Vert Nice!!! thank you!!! kisses.
This is nitpicky, I know, but I thought I'd let you know that what you're calling "poles" are actually the masts, and what you're calling "masts" are the sails.
I too was confused with "masts" and "poles" when it should be "masts" and "sails".
Your picture has 3 masts and 7 sails as drawn ....
Nitpicky? Not at all. I guess I'm what you'd call a landlubber. Thanks for helping me get my sea legs, guys.
Hi there miss Kathy! Can I use this guide of yours to teach my childrens class on how to draw a sailing ship? I do have my own but its just a basic boat and not a ship. Lol. Thank you. :)
Please do, that's what it's there for. I've now got the correct "verbage"in place and everything!
This is wonderful and came with perfect timing! We homeschool and are doing American History this year...we just started reading about Columbus when I saw this drawing lesson! So, we got together with our friends and learned how to draw one of Columbus's ships this week!! :) Here are the results:
