Homemade Dress Drive for Haiti

Last Auguest, when Project HOPE Art was at Nadine’s orphanage in Port-Au-Prince, it became abundantly clear just how few clothes many of her girls have. The items they do own are well worn at best, some just barely holding together. HOPE Art would like to change this with a personal touch by starting a Homemade Dress Drive. We are inviting all seamstresses, beginner to advanced, to make one or more simple sundresses to be hand delivered to the orphanage in Jan. of 2012. This project is being aided by “Oliver + S”, an online pattern company who has kindly agreed to let us use their free sundress pattern that you can download HERE. Please email me with any questions and thanks in advance to all who take this on.

UPDATE: As of March 1st, Hope Art has received 480 sundresses sent from around the world. Our commitment to this drive continues as we share our collection with as many Haitian girls as possible. Thank you everyone!

I'd be happy to make one and send it along to you Kathy. I'm going to guess cotton would be the best fabric for the girls? I have not printed the dress pattern but is it multi sized and in what case what size would you like us to make?

here is a link to a pattern to make simple dressed from a pillow case. my mother made over 40 of these last year for a similar cause. they are fast, easy, and adorable. the best part is that you can find many inexpensive and darling pillow cases at the thrift store. what a great way to help both causes.

Thanks Mrs. Art Teacher, cotton would be great. It's also the easiest way to make the bias strips. Most of the girls are rather tiny, and I think the size 5 or 6 would do for them. Have fun sewing, it's a very easy pattern to sew.

I'd be glad to do up a couple. Any suggestion as to which sizes wold be most needed? i should get a couple done withing the next few weeks.

Kathy Barbro said...

Thanks again everyone, I had no idea I'd get such a great response! I'd love to have extra dresses, if that should happen. I don't have an official size list of the girls, I just feel that they are all in the 6, 7, and 8 range.

DeidraH said...

Im jazzed about making some little girl dresses. Count me in for a few. I'm really liking the idea that they are going to be hand delivered. Makes me feel that they are actually going to get there. Any other things the girls need? Panties? Shoes? Socks?

Kathy Barbro said...

Thanks Deidra,
Yes, these dresses will all be personally given to the girls by Project HOPE Art. I'll be sure to get photos posted when that happens.

When I asked the girls for a wish list on the last day of our visit, they also asked for sunglasses and underwear. Posing for photos with black sunglasses on created a whole lot of giggles. The underwear mention also amazed me. How many of our kids would ask for underwear, if given a chance?

Hi Kathy. You don't know me and I don't know you but I just happened on your blog looking for an art project to do with my grand daughter. When I saw your Homemade Dress Drive I couldn't believe it. I have been wanting to sew some cute little girl dresses to send anywhere where they might be needed. This is the perfect answer. I will definitely do a couple dresses. Thank you for the opportunity.

I just wanted to mention that I made 3 dresses today in size 8. They came out great. I did want to mention that I added an additional piece of fabric on the inside in the front area for modesty because I think the light colored cottons may need this. I just cut the same bodice front piece but only made it about 12 inches long. This was hemmed and layered before the yoke was set in. It came out nice and has the look of a camisole from the inside. Also after the straps were sewn in place I double stitched them across to the yoke for durability. Have fun sewing!

Kathy Barbro said...

I can't wait to see them Deidra, they sound like lovely dresses.

This is such a wonderful project! I have plans of making 2 or 3 in different sizes.
Please send mailing address to: miebrindle@gmail.com

Minkey said...

This is a Great idea! I'd love to make a dress.

Deidra, I was wondering if I should line it, since cottons can be so sheer but that sounded like it would defeat the purpose of a cool sundress. Your idea of just lining the front bodice is what I'll try instead.

Thank you!

Jennifer

Do we need to use that pattern or woould T-shirt dresses (the kind where you attach a skirt to a ready-made T) be OK?

Kathy Barbro said...

Other patterns would be fine, welcomed in fact so that the girls can have a little variety. Thanks for asking!

I see the deadline has passed for sending dresses. Will there be another dress drive? I think my Girl Scout troop would enjoy working on a project like this.

For those still interested, HOPE Art is making this a year round drive. The next deadline for sending dresses is the summer of 2012. More will be posted on this as time approaches. Thanks for asking!

Hi Kathy,

I just was reading the blog and noticed the address of where to send the goods is different than the one you originally gave me. I hope you received the package I sent (roughly 50 pairs of underwear and a bunch of sun glasses). The package did not come back, so I am hoping it is in your care!

Thanks!

Kathy Barbro said...

Thanks Colleen,
I was actually running out of room, and my friend (and HOPE Art partner) Jenni offered to be the recipient from now on. I'm sure she got your goods. Thanks so much for your help!

Kate M said...

My daughter and I sent 2 dresses to Hope Art last week. They were so quick and easy to make that we'd like to have her Girl Scout make some and earn their sewing badges at the same time. Is there a deadline, or will Hope Art continue to receive them after Christmas? Happy Holidays! -Kate

Kathy,

Just wanted to double check to see if you got the 11 dresses I sent you from our school(Avalon Montessori, Toronto, Canada). The kids and I had such a great time making them. Thanks again for a great project!

Kathy Barbro said...

Hi Carrie,
Yes, I see your 11 dresses on our inventory list that Jenni and I are updating. Thanks so much! A few of HOPE Art girls are delivering dresses in early Jan. so I'll post photos as soon as they come in.

I just came across this blog - January 20th - I know it's late, but was wondering if you might be continuing this project? I think it's a wonderful thing for my teenage girls to do - they just learned to sew last summer, and are quite good at it.

Kathy Barbro said...

Thanks for asking and yes, this is an ongoing project now. I am going back with HOPE Art in July, and would be happy to take as many dresses as I can carry. Sew away and let me know when you need an address to send them too. Thanks!!

cammi said...

Hello-
My sister did this project with her Girl Scouts. She was so excited to see a picture of a beautiful little girl on your web site wearing a dress that her daughter made! (little cherry print) She emailed me the photo and now my daughter is excited to participate. We are going to take the photo to her sewing class and see if the other girls would like to participate. Please email me the best address to send the dresses to. Glammi@earthlink.net
Thank you for doing this!

This is very nice, to try to help, but... Have you thought instead of having people contribute funds, and then pay a seamstress in Haiti to make the dresses? Or, contribute a sewing machine, and let the older girls at the orphanage learn to sew, so that they have a lifeskill that would enable them to support themselves and perhaps a family? When we send things, we can sometimes undermine people in the Haitian economy who are trying to make their own living.

Kathy Barbro said...

Thanks Anonymous, you make a good point and that is exactly where our group is headed next. We are collecting some new members that will bring sewing classes to the girls this July – not only for life-skill purposes, but possibly fun costume creation as well. I appreciate your bringing the subject up to raise awareness of all these issues.

Guitar-Fiddle-Singer said...

I'm starting a drive in my neighborhood selling tomatos and tomato sauce that my dad and younger brother got from a boy scout fundraiser, and I'm using the money I earn to buy the fabric to make the dresses. What is the most needed size?

Kathy Barbro said...

Thanks Guitar, we really need larger sizes now as the girls are getting bigger. Size 7 and up would be great.
