PDF Sewing Pattern Giveaway, $130 Value

Before I was bitten by the art teacher bug, I designed a line of stuffed animal patterns. I started with a simple fish, and ended up making more complex shapes like a snake that coils on itself. The patterns all have a common feature though, which is they are heavily top-stitched to muslin fabric, and hot washed and dried which creates a soft, rumpled, old-quilt texture...hence the name, Rumpled Quilt Skins.

I currently sell these patterns in both printed form and pdf format at quilt shops around the country. The retail value of all sixteen patterns is $130. I am offering my entire line as a pdf pattern giveaway, and because I will email the patterns to the winner, anyone with an email address may enter.

To enter this drawing, please leave a comment about the very first thing you ever sewed, or would like to sew if you are just starting. I’d love to read how other sewers out there got their start. This drawing ends Friday, August 13th at midnight PST. Please make sure your comment leaves a way for me to contact you. Links back to my site are always appreciated. Good luck everyone!

Large photos of each stuffed animal pattern may be seen at Rumpled Quilt Skins.

I learned to sew on my mom's old Singer sewing machine that folded into a big wooden cabinet. I started off making Barbie clothes with a simple seam and then later a button. I can remember making my own sundress (one button closure at the neck) when I was probably around ten. My mom and my grandma both were very good at sewing but not so good at teaching. :)

I would love to win the set of patterns! My email is: harmonyfinearts@yahoo.com. I will share your entry on my blog today.

I can't remember the very first thing I sewed but it was probably some type of small purse or drawstring bag. Little purses are still one of my favourite things to make!

I took sewing lessons at 12, but my mom always sewed so I don't remember the first thing I ever sewed, but what got me really into sewing was when I was pregnant with my first child. I made so many baby t-shirts and clothes, I even made all of his bedding. Ahh memories.

I think that the first thing that I ever sewed was a stuffed cat on my Sew Perfect toy sewing machine. I have been sewing ever since and enjoy making clothes for my children, although now I have upgraded the sewing machine to a Bernina.

I learned to sew in a 4-H class when I was in the 4th grade. I made a red and white print apron and then modeled it in a fashion show for seniors at a retirement center. Wow, I had mostly forgotten about that... Your animals are all so adorable and I'm expecting grandchildren soon. Thanks for offering this giveaway!

In my grade school, we had special classes for girls to learn to make things for the home (I dare not say Home Ec) starting from about 8. So, I can remember learning counted cross stitch on pieces of gingham when I was 8, we all made pictures and then when those panels were done we sewed them up into skirts. This did not continue in high school as you could elect out of the Home Ec stream and opt for Commercial studies instead at 13. I started sewing again with a small jumper about 3 years ago when I was given two little girls to love and hold in my heart. Now, both of them wear mama-made and they would love some handmade stuffies too. Thank you for offering the giveaway. E-mail address: dawsonsnest AT gmail DOT com.

I think the first thing I ever really sewed (with a machine) was a burp cloths for my baby girl. I would love to sew much more often now because we just moved to a new place where I have my machine set up all the time. I think that helps a lot because I don't have to drap it out...it sits waiting!

Wow animals! I have been following your blog for inspiration for my daughter. I wish you had continued Sewing project for kids.

Anyway! My first sewing project was a baby frock when I was in my 10th grade. What started as a summer holiday activity became a profession as a Garment Manufacturing Technologist and now for my kids!

Would love this set of patterns to sew for my kiddos.

I LOVE the name Rumpled Quilt Skins!

I first tried sewing on grandma Rae's old cabinegt Singer with a knee pedal, but REALLY started in Home Ec class in junior high, where we sewed a reversible tote bag. I was hooked and never stopped sewing. This is very timely because my 30-year-old Singer machine died the other day and was sent to the big fabric store in the sky, and as of yesterday I am the VERY proud owner of a brand new Janome machine, which I plan to begin using tonight!!

Oh these are SO cute, and my boys both just asked for a handmade snuggly friend. The universe thinks I should win this...

My first sewing endeavor was when I was pregnant with my first child, over six years ago. I made a quilt. Today I look at it's misshapen corners and smile with pride at how far I've come and how much love I put into that first piece.

I grew up next to an elderly couple and used to help Mrs. Cox sort quilt scraps. My mom sewed our clothes, but I never got the sewing bug until college, when I somehow got hired by the theatre department to help sew costumes for the opera! One of my favorite jobs ever. I stopped sewing for a long time but have wanted to start back up. I'd love some more incentive.

As a child I wanted to use my mom's Ward Signature machine. She wouldn't let me until I took some sewing in school. I think it was a turtle pillow that I made first in jr hi school. That sewing machine is mine now and I would love to teach my kids how to sew.

What neat patterns! At least half of them are stuffed animals I know my own children would absolutely adore. And what cute gifts they would make, too!

The very first time I sewed, it was a basic pillow that I hand-embroidered. I was walked through every single step. I was about 14 years old. I didn't have a sewing machine myself for at least 10 more years. When I finally got one of my own, the first thing I sewed was a couple Halloween costumes for my kids. :)

HI!
You have no idea who I am, but I am a fellow artist, and teacher! I have found so many good ideas and tips for my students on your blog, Thank you so much!

I am a dreamer when it comes to sewing. I love do-it-yourself projects and have conquered almost every medium...accept sewing! My experience is limited to having made little blankets to donate to hospitals and a quilt when I went to collage, but I have never really tackled anything too complex. However, I really really really want to learn, and to be honest, these little animals seem like the perfect way to start! I LOVE them!

Thanks again for your inspiration!

Thanks for such a wonderful giveaway. I love your site and referenced often when I was Art docent for my son's class.

The first items I sewed were Barbie clothes. I was about 5 years old. My mom taught me and they were done by hand. Simple dirndl skirts with ribbon waistband and snap closures. Halter tops that tied at the neck and waist. I still love to sew and actually became a fashion designer. I've heard you should look back at what you loved to do when you were kindergarten age for inspiration as what to do as an adult!

Super fun patterns!--And sweet topic.

My mom ALWAYS sewed...most of my clothes, lots of toys, owned her own buisness for a while, designed teddy bears. Sewing has always been there. I'm pretty sure the first thing I sewed was a barbie pillow...or maybe Strawberry Shortcake clothes. All by hand, and my own design,of course. I made a tiger print dress in high school & altered a few items (my favorite being jeans to skirt with plenty of patches...a mohair teddy from my mom's pattern was my final project for German class...etc to now!!

I'm working on a quilt with appliqued horses at the moment. I love hand stitching the best. We have a couple of your patterns and we love them, and hope to start on them soon.

Besides wobbly lines, probably the first things I sewed (all by myself, when I was about 33) were some small pillows/pincushions and bean bags with some Christmas fabric I bought at a remnant table. After that, I didn't do much for a couple of years, then I sewed a twirl skirt for an American Girl doll, and then one for the doll's owner (my daughter). My lines are certainly less wobbly, but I do wish I had started years and years earlier.

I'd love to make more!

I'm totally hooked on your art page and you are enticing me into the world of sewing.

My most memorable "first sewing project" was a big yellow kite I did for a home-ec project in 7th grade. Mine was the only yellow one in the class and flew so well that the spool of string quickly ran out and the kite flew off into the distance. After three days and several periods of school missed searching for it my friends and I found it lodged in a tree at the edge of the woods. I hung it in my bedroom for years afterward.

I wrote you once before, telling you how blessed our family is by your art website. We home school, and our daughters are starting to take an interest in sewing. Two weeks ago a family friend taught us all how to stitch a handbag. Oh, how I want that to just be the beginning for us all! With four daughters (so far :)), I'd better get my act together! I think your Rumpled Quilt Skins would be a blast to do; they're so my taste!

Thank you again. You inspire in so many ways. My email is mel_renaldo@yahoo.com. Have a great week!

I began sewing at a very young age. I sewed next to my mom who could make just about anything. I started with making my own pillow cases, moved onto an artbag/purse, made and sold eyelet/button hairbands at the flea market, and got to my first chinese collarless button down blouse in pretty red when I was around 10. I have crafted during most of my 29 years since that shirt but find myself doing less intricate things since having two young boys. These patterns seem to be a perfect way to get going again and introduce my boys to some stitching just as my mom showed me. Eventually I want them to be able to knit and sew and craft even though boys are not necessarily encouraged to do that. I would love to pass on my love for textiles and just the beauty of the handmade craft to them.

Thanks for your blog. It is really a great and inspiring resource for me.

Hi Kathy,
My Grandmother taught me how to sew on her Singer one way stitch machine in 1964. You would have to turn the material 180 degrees to lock the seam. We made a dark blue Moo-moo with gold stitching. Gold stitching because she was showing me a skill that was special and precious just like "gold". I was 10 at the time. Just this past year I taught my 19 year old son how to thread a machine, cut a pattern and sew on my, high tech, singer. He sewed his first costume for Comic Con. I'd love to own your patterns and set up an after school intramural for my middle school art students and teach the basic fundamentals of beginning sewing. Paying it forward.

Uhm, well the first thing I remember trying to sew was a dress for a barbie doll. My grandmother had explained how basting tape worked to me but forgot that I was a overly curious and impatient child (to put it mildly).

So....I cut a huge patch of fabric out of her bathroom curtains and tried to iron the dress onto the doll with a hot iron and safety pins (ya gotta love the 70's when kids could do those things unsupervised).

The end result? The back of Barbie's legs melted into the dress!

Now I don't remember cutting the fabric but I do remember draping the fabric around the doll thinking "This is gonna look GREAT!"

Being the only kid at the time in the house when questioned about the crime, I naturally lied about it only to have the half melted Barbie produced as evidence wearing her dress! BUSTED!

Needless to say my grandmother is still complaining about all of the destruction to "her things" from me - cutting off buttons, popping out rhinestones, cutting up magazines.

My reply? "If you had just given me some art supplies you wouldn't have had this problem!" Now, I'm an elementary art teacher and can play in the supplies all I want.

O o I only have one hour!
My first experience with sewing was at school. We started at a machine with no thread and at lined-paper. Later we made a 'real' apron at school.
Many years later, when I started to work, I bought myself a sewingmachine and some magazines and I teached myself to make some real clothes. And I love it!

I am just starting to learn to sew. I first tried hand sewing, I don't know why because it seemed easier I guess. I made a Patrick (from Spongebob) stuffed toy for my niece. I have sewed a nursing pillow and a nursing cover using the sewing machine for myself. I really want to get more practice with the machine.

Funny thing, I don't really sew. Sure I learned in home ec class in junior high, but haven't since then. I recently fixed a little stuff animal for my daughter when it fell apart and found myself dreaming of making some stuffed animals for her. I would love to give these a try.

Thanks so much for the opportunity!

My first effort at sewing was in a class as a young teenager, the project: an apron. By 20, I was able to make an evening gown from a European pattern(no seem allowances, etc.) complete with boning. From modest beginnings, much can be achieved. Now I am sewing for my soon-to-be teenager who has a sea themed bedroom ... just waitng for some adorable quilted creatures! Love the designs! cndrion@gmail.com

The first thing I ever sewed was a pillow. I love sewing. My grandmother teaches me. I am 10. I made a sock monkey the other day. I hope I win this because I really want to make some of those animals.

The first thing I ever sewed was a bag back in the 70s in a 4-H sewing club. I would LOVE to win this for my daughter who has recently sewed a sock monkey and prior to that made herself a new comforter for her bed and some pillows (with the help of my mom).

The first thing I ever made was a purple princess seamed dress. I chose the wrong fabric (too lightweight) and went crazy with trim and lace. I was in fifth grade, so I thought it was fantastic. I wore that dress a lot.
Thanks for your great blog, it has given me great inspiration.

I'm just starting, really. The first thing I ever machine sewed was a blanket for my first daughter. It came out a little wonky, but we still love it. My daughters would go nuts for any of those animals.

I was fortunate enough to spend the summers with my Grandmother. When I was 8 years old, she taught me to sew on her old black iron Singer machine. No fancy stitches, just forwards & backwards. The pattern that she bought me was for a pair of bermuda shorts. We prewashed the fabric, laid the pattern on it and pinned it. She showed me how to mark the pattern, cut it with the notches, and follow all the instructions very carefully. She even showed me how to put the zipper in the shorts (which I still don't do very well to this day, but...). My bermuda shorts took most of the summer to make and were not perfect when finished but I wore those things proudly all through that winter!

The first thing I sewed was a funny little rag doll made from tubular bandages. She was called Gallydora after the book, and was a odd looking little child, but I was so hugely proud of my "abilities"!

wow, I WANT this!! :) I first learned to sew from my best friends mom. I was so jealous that she had a mom that could make all these cool things! She offered to teach me and we started with pajama pants. So I probably made 20 pairs of pajama pants before I finally went on to more interesting things! Now I am up for trying anything! Love it!
