This is a great project for beginners, say like kindergarten or so. Simple shapes to draw, yet easy to personalize with a crown or extra fancy feathers. 1. Students trace a small cup for a round head. A line is drawn to the right, and curve below to make a large half circle for the body. Two legs are added, curves for the tail, and details on the head. All these lines are traced with a crayon when complete.
2. My favorite way for young ones to paint is still with dissolved watercolor tablets. They can concentrate on filling the shapes, and not about getting the right amount of water mixed with the paint. Students paint the body first, and then sprinkle a bit of salt on it while the paint is still wet. The salt absorbs the water, makes a cool texture, and may be rubbed off when the entire painting is complete. After the body is filled, the background may be painted in with one or more colors.

I love your site! I am a frequent user of your art lessons...Thanks so much for posting all your great ideas! Where do you purchase your watercolor tablets? I have never used them before and I would like to try...
This looks like lots of fun for a journal page to experimtent with some new water soluble crayons I 've been gifted and some paints too. And of course trying a new technique, the salt. I like the motled look of the birds color.
You are fantastic.
Thanks Debra,
1 actually just pop out the dry tablets that come in the regular Crayola watercolor trays. You can experiment with the ratio of water to lighten or darken the color.
You have a great blog! I just linked to it from my site where I talked about two new picture books about Diego Rivera. I thought a fun project to do after reading these books would be murals, and your templates would help the process.
Thanks!

thanks...I should have known:)
Does the salt need to be the coarse, rock salt?
No, just table salt. Kosher is optional! :)
I need to tell you THANK YOU for this wonderful site!! I am my son's 2nd grade class' "art mom." I have no training and only a basic artistic talent. I could not fulfill my duties without your wonderful ideas.
Today we made this watercolor chicken with the salt. The kids were incredibly enthusiastic with many of them telling me this was their favorite art project yet. Knowing they were actually able to draw a chicken did so much good for their self esteem!!! Even the kids who grumble each week when I come were smiling at the end of the class.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!
