Art Journaling Watercolor Blocks

I started an afterschool class for art journaling last year, and this is one of the first projects I started with. The goal was to find a fun way to mix writing with drawing.
1. After review of art journal pages over on Flickr, I decided to make a colorful background pattern that I would write on when complete. I used 3" square Post-Its to move around on my journal page as I drew radiating lines over the edges with a fine black Sharpie marker.
2. I colored in the squares lightly with watercolor pencils, and painted over them with water to make a painting. The space around the squares were also colored and painted.
3. After the painting was dry, I wrote a few notes about my day inside the squares with a few different gel pens. Overall, I like the overlapping transparent look to the squares and think this process has more possibilities...

Hi Kathy :) I am a long time reader - it's a joy to visit with you and read/see the ideas you share. Thanks for that.

I love this idea of journaling with art and with notes. The "snippets" format will appeal greatly to my sweeties.

Blessings to you, Q

Thanks everyone! I plan on working out and posting journal ideas for the next week at least. I always meant to do this and decided the time has come.

Oh my goodness.....I have been away from your site for a while. I am a homeschool mom who LOVES your site for Art in our home!! And let me tell you -
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS IDEA!!!

Oh my, I just love it. I have been trying to get my kids to journal (nature) and what a great way to do both - and I just love it...can you tell I am excited? Wow! Can't wait to start on this one! Thanks for your amazing ideas...just love them!! You are very gifted! My kids have loved all the projects we have done so far! Thanks again!

Wow - thanks CEO, you just made my day! I'm also excited about starting this, thinking a bit more of logistics lately. Each class could start with a sharing of what students have done on their own, etc. I never seem to have time to do that in the regular classes, so this special class would finally allow for that.

Hi Kathy-

Where do you buy the journals? I'd like to use this in my 5th grade class this year. You have been a real inspiration. My class used the Van Gogh mural as a culminating activity for an artist study last year. They created a podcast for it. http://bmcgrath.wordpress.eusd.net/
Check it out if you get a chance.

All the best,

Barin

Thanks Barin,
I'll check out that podcast. I actually gave the journals a bit of thought and settled on a 7" x 10" spiral with a black finished cover.
I've tried the unfinished cover versions before and had too many headaches with kids that didn't like how their cover came out and wanted new ones, etc. I'll find out in Sept. if I made the right choice, but I think that the size is big enough for young kids to work on, but not so large that any page would take more than one class to finish. Anyhow - I'm excited about turning kids onto this. I'd love to know how your experiences come out too.

I'm sorry Kathy, but would you mind pointing me in the direction of where I could get something like this? I like the dimesions, but I can't tell if it is a sketch pad, or does it have watercolor paper inside? Any online stores or other places I might want to look? Michael's? Target? Staples?

Thanks in advance.

No problem. It's a regular sketchbook. I bought mine at Michael's because of all the coupons they have, but you could go to:

http://www.dickblick.com/products/cachet-classic-wirebound-black-cover-sketchbook/

and get it there. The bulk rate is close to what I paid.

Hello
I have really loved looking at all the WONDERFUL "stuff" on your site! You said you use a regular sketch book. How do do the water color pencils with out the water bleeding through the page? Or does it not bleed through?
Thanks
Lora

Thanks. I have found that some of my pages are showing through a bit on the other side. I decided to leave a spread in between each layout, and will glue them together when I am finished. It's not bothering me though because I kind of like the overall additional, wrinkly texture. Makes the book thicker!

Over the last couple of years I've used many of your ideas for our homeschool art time. Last week I started with the art journal. We will complete a page every Friday together and then they are free to add to it during the week. My kids are working on this page right this very minute and are absolutely loving it. They are working so hard and the amount of writing is just right. It gets them writing, gives them an alotted amount of space to fill up and is completely doable in about an hour or less. I do have a question. We've been using the Prismacolor Watercolor pencils, but the end result doesn't look quite like yours. We color in the area then using a paint brush add water. The pencil strokes look blurred but not watery. The strokes are still very visable. What can we do differently?
