This was a big hit, and I think I worked out a system where 20 to 30 casts could be poured in about 50 minutes without any tears ... especially mine!
1. Give each student a square of heavy cardboard (about 6" ), a ball of clay (about 4" diam.) and a toy...

This looks like so much fun! Thank you for the great idea. I will do this with the kids for sure.
Did you use oil based clay for this? Just curious! It looks super fun!
I used Laguna clay - the kind used for ceramic projects. It's about $12 for a giant 20 lb. slab. Worked great, even when some teachers forgot to unwrap the casts for a day or two.
I discovered another terrific alternative to using glaze when working with clay....SHOE POLISH!
The clay only needs to be bisque-fired, and then using shoe polish (the type that comes in the round tins), you use old sponges to apply the shoe polish to the clay. The results are amazing! The more you "polish"(i.e. rub) the polish into the bisqued clay, the shiner a finish you will get. So the range can be from a natural looking finish to something with some sheen.
Very nice results and cuts down on glaze time/kiln disasters!
This is perfect for my son, thanks a lot.
