Over the years, I’ve enjoyed wonderful results with group murals that I have created. This is my very first. My Butterfly Mural consists of 32 letter-size pages. In full format, it measures 56" x 37". Cutting out the butterfly is optional. This sample was colored with Portfolio® Oil Pastels. I think that kinders and 1st graders have fun just coloring freely, but older students could be guided to fill the background of the wings with warm colors, and the spots with cool colors. I’ve found that a class of 20 can finish coloring one butterfly in a 45-minute class. I try to emphasize the fact that one person coloring all those pages alone would take hours, but with everyone working together, a beautiful piece of art can be made in under an hour.

Kathy,
This is such a great project! I love the graphic nature of the butterfly. I have been doing group projects with all of the grades in my kids' school and with the 3rd graders I did a group painting very much like this. Here is the link:

I still have to adhere the squares to a canvas but
I love the way it's turned out so far!
Have a great night!

I come to your site often (and even have it bookmarked). I thought it was time to leave you a comment! I love coming here and getting the great art ideas. I have a daughter who loves art! Your site is perfect because she is past the stage of the cheesy younger crafty things, and I really need help in showing her new things that are more artsy than craftsy (as she is more of an artist than crafter, although she does both!). Your site is just perfect for us and I really appreciate the ideas that you have out here for people like my daughter and I! Thank You!

I just love your blog and all of the wonderful ideas that you share. Thank you for posting and I hope that you continue to long enough for my little ones (age 3 and 1 1/2) to try out your projects!
oh I love this, I want to do butterflies in the spring with my k/1 class. We do big buddies with a grade 4 class and this will be a perfect big buddy project for display in our hall!
Kathy,
I just finished this with my Pre-K class this morning. They had to guess what the pieces created. When it was all put together they were so excited to see the finished butterfly.
I would recommend this to any art teacher!
Thanks so much, Kathy!
hi Kathy-
just curious... my son's 3rd grade has 20 children-do you think there is a way to have everyone participate while there are only 26 pages that include butterfly body?
any thoughts/suggestions? thank you! Julie ( I purchased this last week)- love the giraffe too!
oops i meant 29 children- thanks!
Hi ohHappyDay,
Sorry I didn't see your question until now. You bring up a good point about the number of pages - I think I'm going to make future murals with at least 30 pages. I'm finding it easier to deal with extra pages (the quick kids can do two) than it is to not have enough. Meanwhile, could you have the class do two butterflies - maybe one to give away? I just did a butterfly with a 20 second graders and we had it all colored and taped together in about 45 minutes. Coloring all the pages for two might keep everyone busy for an hour.
I LOVE the butterfly mural! My students are having so much fun with it! Thanks!
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can attach my butterfly mural to? Since it is large and also an odd size, canvas is probably going to be a bit pricey. Any suggestions or ideas for a surface to adhere to would be greatly appreciated. Thanks-
Hey,
I love your art projects!!! I really want to purchase the butterfly mural, so i went to the paypal check out. It wouldn't go through, do you only accept visa??? How can i pay you with a mastercard??
Kim
Hi,
I think that Paypal does accept Mastercard. At least that's what a quick Google search told me. If you are really stuck, you can email me for an address to mail a check.
Hi Kathy,
I really love you butterfly mural project and would like to buy it to do with my class. I live in England however and it is a project i'd like to do next week - if I purchase it would you be able to email it to me?
Jenny
love coming here. Full of ideas. Thanks for sharing.

We just completed the butterfly and we all admire it hanging in our cafeteria. The kids also enjoyed the Scream when we made it last October. Your mural templates are awesome!
Can anyone tell me when they print these pages out, are you just printing out on regular computer paper or is there somehthing heavier? Sorry- I am art challenged! :)
I would like to purchase this mural, but there is no "add to cart" button. Please help!
Thanks,
lynn
this is a very butterfly mural, so colorful and very interesting, with wonderful colors that it makes them look very different from another mural.
