Jim Dine is considered an important contemporary artist who helped to create the Pop Art movement. He used different popular imagery in his art, but hearts seemed to be his favorite.1. This watercolor resist painting uses rubber cement to help make an “artsy” looking background. I started with paper that had 6 hearts already printed on it to make the project move faster. The students are to color each one in with crayons, pressing hard to make them brightly colored.
2. A background watercolor paint is chosen and covered over all the hearts. Let the paint dry. Rubber cement is painted over the entire picture using large quick strokes. The goal is to just make some lines, and leave some empty spaces. Let the cement dry.
3. A contrasting watercolor paint is chosen and painted over the entire picture. The cement will keep the background color intact. Let the paint dry.
4. To add definition more oil pastels may be used again on top. Tell the students that the goal is to have colorful, bold hearts that stand out from the background. When they think that is achieved, their art is done!

Hi Kathy :) I have been reading your blog for some time now and wanted to say hello.
This is a super project idea! Thanks so much - Q
Do you remove the rubber cement after the paint dries? What kind of paper is this on?
Thanks,
EKP
Hi EKP,
I actually planned to remove the cement but found it wasn't necessary. It doesn't show and my test rubbing didn't seem to make the cement ball up like it usually does. So - keep your life simple and just leave it on, I say. Oh, and I did use watercolor paper so the colors would be bright. Thanks for asking!
Hello Kathy, I discovered your blog just a few days ago, and I love it! you have such wonderful ideas, I wonder could I do any of these with my almost 4 y. old daughter?
thanks a million for your ideas
Hi Clemencia,
Thanks for your compliments. I think you could look at the "0" grade level projects (which translates into the kinder level) and just simplify them if you can. Painting just a few flowers in a vase, for instance. Just have fun and see what comes from it!
Kathy,
I have been reading for awhile now, and using your projects with our budding artists. They can't get enough. Thank you for all the awesome ideas!! I think we are going to try this one too.
This is gorgeous! I've been looking for projects kids can make for Valentine's Day-thanks tons! I'll be linking.
What a fun idea. Now I need to go get a new bottle of rubber cement!
Thanks for another wonderful and timely project idea.

Thank you Faye - I'd love to have my ideas placed on your website. Any links you could have back to my site would be greatly appreciated. Let me know how it goes!
Hi Kathy,
You have no idea how valuable your website has been to me. At 45 years old I am in my first year of teaching art to K-2. After 20+ years as an art director in the publishing world you could say I am experiencing my mid-life crisis. Thanks to you, I always have a great resource for lesson plans and ideas. I've searched the web a lot for art ideas but I always find what I'm looking for right here. This Jim Dine project is a great example. Young children get to create a fun work of art for Valentine's Day and you even work in a little art history! How wonderful. Thank you so much for sharing your considerable talent.

Dude, nice painting with different color hearts. I would like to give this kind of good things as valentine gifts with fresh valentine flowers.
Thanks for sharing nice information.
I love this idea and am trying it today on my daughter's 5th grade class. Just in time for Valentine's Day! I have never seen ANY website with such wonderful, gradeschool art ideas. Thank you for sharing!

Please let me know how long this project takes? I am a parent & teach Art to my son's class at his private school. I have an 1 1/2 hr and would love to do this.
I made this with my child care site today! Very easy for little ones :)
thanks for always posting great projects

Mindy,
Thanks for your comment. I think you could do this pretty easily in an hour and a half. Just be sure to have the kids spread the rubber cement out in big, brushy strokes - no blobs allowed. Have fun!
What a wonderful idea. Thanks for sharing
I had my first graders do this...minus the rubber cement/2nd layer of watercolor painting. This is definitely going on my list of favorites! The kids had a ball, and the paintings look fabulous mounted on construction paper backgrounds (I use complimentary colors in contrast with their watercolor backgrounds). Thanks for the great idea!
Hi- Love this project. I just did it with my first grade class for our school's first annual Art Walk. Be warned, however, that if kids use washable crayons the paper becomes a muddy mess when you do the watercolor wash! I have two kids with those types of crayons and they ended up having to do the project all over :(

, I wanted to say thanks for all the the great ideas. :)
You are always posting great projects!

Hi Kathy,
I'm an elementary art teacher and I like this art project and will be using it tomorrow. I would suggest instead of the rubber cement someone can use the cray-pas extender. I will be using this with special ed. kindergarten and the cray-pas extender I feel is the better way to go for me. Thanks for the idea!
Can this be done in 10 - 15 minutes? My son's 5th grade class has a Vday party on the 12th and I am in charge of the craft. If it can be done in 10 - 15 minutes I can sell it. Maybe do some and then go off and come back to it later? We have four stations and an hour to do it all!!!
I'm so excited! I was about to do some project during school today. however, I decided to create ypur crafts once again, I am so thrilled with your site.
