Some tissue paper has an amazing ability to bleed when it is mixed with water. Cut-up squares can be used to control the color and make an easy way to paint...without the paint. Word of advice: not all tissue paper bleeds. My impression is that the cheaper variety from Michael's works best, but it is something you need to test before starting. 1. Older students can draw their own pumpkin, younger ones may need a template to trace. A horizon line is added. After the drawing is done in pencil, the lines should be traced with a permanent black marker.
2. My favorite is to get 2 values of orange, green and purple tissue paper. For instance, I cut up dark orange and light orange paper into 2 inch squares, along with dark and light green, and dark and light purple. The students are to wet their drawing with a brush, and then place the tissue paper on the spots they want to color. Working in sections, they should gradually cover their entire paper with colored tissue paper squares.
3. When finished, the tissue paper can be removed to reveal the color that has bled below. Beware, stained fingers seem to be unavoidable, unless gloves are used.

Today we tried this using Dick Blick craft tissue paper and heavyweight drawing paper. The tissue didn't bleed at all. We even tried to put the rougher side of the tissue face down thinking that was our problem. Do you have any ideas of what went wrong? Should we have used crepe paper? This is the first project we've done of yours that didn't work out as directed. Thanks for all your great projects. My homeschooled kids and I love them.
Hi,
I'm sorry to hear that you had some trouble with this. I think you need the cheap drug store kind of tissue paper, which I should have mentioned. I don't know of any info you can look for on the labels of different tissue paper, you just have to experiment a bit first. Thanks for writing though - I'll add an advisement on my posting.
Hallmark brand tissue paper does not bleed either.
My three year old made this with me. Our tissue bleeded well. I don't know where we got it, but I would describe it as thicker and a bit rough. My son loved spraying the water all over the tissue. He was so excited to see the colors go onto the paper. To paint the pumpkin would have been difficult for him, but to spray it was very fun! Thanks for the idea!
Just wanted to let you know I left you an award at my blog.
What a great idea! Thanks for sharing it.
There are two kinds of tissue paper, bleeding and non-bleeding. You can get the bleeding kind from school supply catalogs and art supply places/
