This is a good way to turn ugly brown construction paper into something pretty cute. The white tempera paint looks a lot like real frosting.1. With an 18" x 12" sheet of brown construction paper, each student folds the paper lengthwise so that it is 9" x 12" and open again. The students draw in pencil a simple body figure that is centered on the fold crease. The body hands, feet and head should be large and almost touch the edge of the paper.
2. The students use white tempera to paint the outside edge of the body with a thick white line, and then add some simple details like eyes and mouth and buttons. They are to leave some of the paper brown for the “gingerbread” look.
3. After the paint is dry, the students use oil pastels to add details such as stripe, dots, eyes and buttons.
4. Students cut out their gingerbread cookie with scissors.

I like this! I think I'll use brown paper grocery sacks since I've got a surplus.
I really love your site. I homeschool my 3 kids, and have used a lot of your projects for our art curriculum. Thank you for sharing all of your great ideas!
I am using this project with my 4th graders. I work at a school where most children don't have much encouragement to be creative and they don't have access to materials or exposure to the visual arts or creative process. Some of my students struggled with this...all of them had fun with it! Thanks for sharing these great ideas. Your site makes planning art so easy. In addition,I often find ways to combine these projects with writing and social studies content. I'm sending the link to your site to all my colleagues.

I check you site daily! Thank you thank you for all the wonderful ideas!
I do this project with my Kinders every year and we bake a gingerbread man cake........decorate........and eat ! They talk about it for many years there after. The white paint is what really makes it cute ! It always takes two class periods to create the lil' man and the oil pastels look great ! You can find the cake pan at your local Dept. store. Enjoy ! Happy Holidays !
