This is a good way to turn ugly brown construction paper into something pretty cute.1. Give each student a 18" x 12" sheet of brown construction paper. Show the students how to fold the paper lengthwise so that the paper is folded into a 9" x 12" size and open again. Show the students how to draw with a pencil a simple body figure that is centered on the fold crease. The body hands, feet and head should be large and almost touch the edge of the paper.
2. Give the students white tempera paint and have them paint over the outside edge of the body with a thick line, and then add some simple details like eyes and mouth and buttons. They are to leave some of the paper showing though for the "gingerbread" look.
3. After the paint is dry (several hours later) give the students oil pastels and ask them to add detail such as stripes and dots around the outside edge. Colored buttons and eyes and such may be added as well.
4. Pass out scissors so the students may cut out their gingerbread cookie.

I like this! I think I'll use brown paper grocery sacks since I've got a surplus.
I really love your site. I homeschool my 3 kids, and have used a lot of your projects for our art curriculum. Thank you for sharing all of your great ideas!
I am using this project with my 4th graders. I work at a school where most children don't have much encouragement to be creative and they don't have access to materials or exposure to the visual arts or creative process. Some of my students struggled with this...all of them had fun with it! Thanks for sharing these great ideas. Your site makes planning art so easy. In addition,I often find ways to combine these projects with writing and social studies content. I'm sending the link to your site to all my colleagues.
