Watercolor Caterpillar

A good lesson for kindergarteners on up. Reading "A Very Hungry Caterpillar" before drawing is recommended.
1. With a pencil, ask the students to draw about 7 vertical lines in the middle of a sheet of watercolor paper.
2. Starting on the top left, show them how to "jump" from top to top to connect the lines with curves.
3. Repeat the "jumping" line on the bottom to enclose the body.
4. Add feet, tail and head.
5. Trace all of the pencil lines with a dark crayon.
6. Fill in caterpillar with liquid watercolor paint, and add a background color.

Kathy,
I love your blog and am so happy to have found it. I've even mentioned it on my own teaching blog. Thanks for the inspiration!

Hi Kathy! Just wanted to say hello by this way. You have a very nice and inspiring blog, thank you so much for sharing your ideas! And I love the watercolor caterpillar, I will invite my soon 3year old to this tomorrow :-)

Hi again, by the way Kathy, do you have some ideas for smaller kids (2,5 - 3years) who just have begun to paint and draw? (Or do you know some good art books for smaller kids?) Kind regards ;-)

Hi Yvonne,
I don't have any quick recommendations for you - my teaching experience started with my son in kindergarten. I do know that in general preschool kids just need to play around with the different materials like crayons and markers and paint. I would encourage them to make up their own pictures and just have fun!

My boys made their own caterpillars based on this post ... tied to poetry month. Check it out.

I did this art project with my kindergartners last year for our annual art walk. The caterpillars came out fantastic. I love your blog and I have tried many of your art projects with my son. Thanks again!

This caterpillar is adorable - he reminds me of an old-fashioned radiator!
